TH/E BEDSIDE SERIES: Nick Wakeman of Studio Nicholson

    Interview
    Isabella Davey

Welcome to the bedside series, where we are celebrating our friends through their most intimate and telling space: the bedside table. From well-worn novellas to classical tomes, cups of coffee and personal totems from afar: what we are keeping close in this time of introspection are signals of who we are and where we imagine ourselves to be.

Asking our friends what they are reading, what they are seeing, what they are thinking and what are they smelling first thing in the morning and last thing late at night, Timothy Han / Edition takes a look at how scent can impact our environments, surroundings and our homes in a global time of uncertainty and change.

First off, we spoke to founder of designer menswear and womenswear brand Studio Nicholson, Nick Wakeman. Having harnessed her modern, considered and modular approach to fashion into a global brand stocked internationally, Nick tells us about why her Timothy Han/ Edition She Came To Stay candle reminds her of Heady nights in Paris in the 90’s and how the first thing she does every morning is stretch out the kinks.

What do you have on your bedside table?
Ear plugs - I  am a light sleeper.

What are you reading right now and why?
This week I’m alternating between ‘In Praise of Shadows’ by Junichiro Tanizaki & 'The Science of The Secondary' zine on the indoors versus the outdoors that I picked up in Japan.

What TH/E candle do you have on your bedside table and why that particular scent from the range?
I have ’The She Came to Stay’ candle - A favourite because of the patchouli / cedar wood element.

What does TH/E candle remind you of?
Heady nights in Paris in the ’90’s.

What made you fall in love with TH/E's scents?
TH/E brand identity is authentic and every scent evokes a narrative. There is a feeling of escapism - which we need now more than ever.

What are you spending your time doing at home during lock down?
Working - I've never been busier having to connect in a virtual / digital world with our suppliers / customers and team.

What is the first thing you do in the morning?
    Stretch out the kinks.

What is the last thing you do at night?
I make sure my home looks like it’s ready to welcome me the next morning.
